Sleep-Wake Cycles01:24

Sleep-Wake Cycles

1.2K
Sleep is an essential physiological process vital to maintaining overall well-being. The reticular activating system (RAS), a network of neurons in the brainstem, regulates wakefulness and sleep. While it may seem passive, sleep consists of distinct cycles, each with its unique characteristics and functions. Two key sleep phases are non-rapid eye movement (NREM) and  rapid eye movement (REM).
NREM Sleep
NREM sleep comprises four progressive stages that seamlessly merge:

Insufficient Sleep and Sleep Deprivation01:13

Insufficient Sleep and Sleep Deprivation

137
Insufficient sleep refers to not getting the recommended amount of sleep for optimal functioning, even if it's just slightly less than needed. Sleep insufficiency may occur due to lifestyle choices, such as staying up late for social events or work, resulting in routinely getting less sleep than required. For example, consistently sleeping 6 hours when the body needs 7-9 hours can lead to cumulative effects on health and well-being.
Sleep deprivation is a more severe form of sleep loss...

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Immunology
  • Sleep Science

Background:

  • Sleep is vital for physical and mental health.
  • Sleep disorders and deprivation increase risks for metabolic and neurodegenerative diseases.
  • Microglia, the central nervous system (CNS) immune cells, are increasingly recognized for their role in sleep regulation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To discuss the involvement of microglia in various sleep disorders.
  • To explore the impact of sleep deprivation on microglial functions.
  • To examine the potential role of microglia in sleep disorders comorbid with Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases.

Main Methods:

  • Literature review and synthesis of current research on microglia and sleep.
  • Analysis of studies investigating microglial involvement in specific sleep disorders.
  • Examination of research on the effects of acute and chronic sleep deprivation on microglia.

Main Results:

  • Microglia are implicated in regulating the sleep-wake cycle.
  • Sleep alterations and deprivation significantly impact microglial function.
  • Microglia may play a role in the pathophysiology of sleep disorders linked to neurodegeneration.

Conclusions:

  • Microglia are key players in CNS responses to sleep changes.
  • Understanding microglial roles is essential for addressing sleep disorders and associated neurodegenerative conditions.
  • Further research into microglia-sleep interactions holds therapeutic potential.
