    Summary

Chlamydia trachomatis infections can cause periappendicitis, a secondary appendicitis. In women with acute salpingitis, doctors should check for appendicitis and test for Chlamydia trachomatis.

    Area of Science:

    • Gynecology
    • Infectious Diseases
    • Pathology

    Background:

    • Periappendicitis, inflammation of the appendix, is often associated with gastrointestinal infections.
    • The role of sexually transmitted infections in secondary appendicitis is not well-established.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the potential link between Chlamydia trachomatis infection and the development of periappendicitis.

    Main Methods:

    • A retrospective analysis of 112 women diagnosed with laparoscopically verified acute salpingitis.
    • Histological confirmation of secondary appendicitis in a subset of patients.
    • Microbiologic testing of genital tracts for Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae.

    Main Results:

    • Seven out of 112 women with acute salpingitis were diagnosed with secondary appendicitis.
    • Chlamydia trachomatis was detected in the genital tracts of all seven patients with periappendicitis.
    • Neisseria gonorrhoeae was not detected in any of these patients.

    Conclusions:

    • Periappendicitis may be a novel manifestation of Chlamydia trachomatis infection.
    • Clinicians should consider Chlamydia trachomatis in sexually active women presenting with acute salpingitis and secondary appendicitis.
    • Examination of fallopian tubes during appendectomy and appropriate testing are recommended.
