Background:

  • Myocardial calcification is characterized by excess calcium deposition in the heart muscle.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To report two cases of myocardial calcification.
  • To conduct a systematic review of the clinical course and associated pathologies of myocardial calcification.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic review of PubMed and Scopus databases.
  • Inclusion criteria: case reports/series, CT diagnosis, adequate patient data, English publication.
  • Analysis of 75 patients with myocardial calcification.

Main Results:

  • Commonly associated conditions included sepsis (24 patients) and myocarditis (14 patients).
  • Mortality rates varied: 33% with sepsis, 14% with myocarditis, 11% with other pathologies.
  • CT findings of calcification persisted but showed regression over time; autopsy revealed fibrosis and inflammation.

Conclusions:

  • Sepsis and myocarditis are frequently reported comorbidities of myocardial calcification.
  • Computed tomography (CT) findings of myocardial calcification may regress with successful treatment of the underlying disease.
