    Theophylline overdose can cause seizures, even at lower serum levels, especially in patients with prior neurological damage. Careful monitoring and reduced dosages are crucial to prevent these adverse events.

    THE USE OF HIGH LEADS IN THE EARLY DIAGNOSIS OF MYOCARDIAL INFARCTION.

    Background:

    • Theophylline is a bronchodilator used for respiratory conditions.

    • Two cases of seizure activity were observed in patients with theophylline overdose.
    • Serum theophylline levels in these patients were 26 and 26.3 micrograms/dl.
    • Both patients presented with pre-existing neurological damage.

    • Seizure activity occurred at relatively low serum theophylline concentrations.
    • Prior neurologic damage appears to increase susceptibility to theophylline-induced seizures.
    • Literature review suggests potential mechanisms for this reaction.

    Implications:

    • Patients with prior neurological damage require careful monitoring of serum theophylline levels.
    • Reduced theophylline dosage may be necessary in susceptible individuals.
    • Clinicians should consider the possibility of seizures at lower-than-expected theophylline levels.
