    Summary

Aciclovir effectively treated herpes simplex encephalitis in four patients, leading to complete recovery even in severe cases. This antiviral medication shows promise for a disease previously associated with high mortality and severe neurological deficits.

    Area of Science:

    • Neurology
    • Virology
    • Infectious Diseases

    Background:

    • Herpes simplex encephalitis (HSE) is a severe neurological condition.
    • Historically, HSE has a high mortality rate and significant long-term neurological sequelae.
    • Limited effective treatment options were available prior to specific antiviral therapies.

    Observation:

    • Four patients presenting with clinical signs of herpes simplex encephalitis were treated.
    • Herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection was laboratory-confirmed in three of the four patients.
    • Patients exhibited severe initial disease presentations.

    Findings:

    • All four patients achieved a complete cure following Aciclovir treatment.
    • The treatment was successful despite the severity of the initial HSE manifestations.
    • Virological confirmation of HSV was established in the majority of treated individuals.

    Implications:

    • Aciclovir demonstrates significant efficacy in treating herpes simplex encephalitis.
    • The findings highlight Aciclovir as a crucial therapeutic agent for HSE.
    • This antiviral therapy offers a favorable prognosis, reducing mortality and severe disability associated with HSE.
