    Summary

The FGR proto-oncogene is a protein kinase. Its viral counterpart, v-FGR, is a fusion product of viral gag, actin, and proto-FGR genes, lacking the actin sequence found in the cellular gene.

    Oncogenesis·2019

    Area of Science:

    • Molecular Biology
    • Oncogene Research
    • Genetics

    Background:

    • FGR is a member of the protein kinase oncogene family.
    • FGR exhibits high homology to the YES gene within its family.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To isolate and characterize the human c-FGR locus.
    • To investigate the genetic structure of the FGR gene and its viral homolog.

    Main Methods:

    • Isolation of a molecular clone of the human c-FGR locus using a v-YES probe.
    • Nucleotide sequence determination of the isolated c-FGR gene.

    Main Results:

    • The v-FGR gene product is a tri-chimeric protein.
    • It comprises viral gag, actin gene, and proto-FGR gene sequences.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • The actin gene-like sequence present in v-FGR is absent in the c-FGR gene.
  • Conclusions:

    • The v-FGR gene represents a fusion of viral and cellular genetic elements.
    • Understanding the structure of v-FGR provides insights into oncogene activation and viral oncogenesis.
