    Caloric restriction in hypothyroid patients reduces serum T3 levels, similar to euthyroid individuals. Pituitary-thyroid function, including TSH secretion, remains unaltered during this nonthyroidal illness model.

    Background:

    • Caloric restriction mimics nonthyroidal illness, potentially affecting thyroid hormone regulation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the impact of caloric restriction on thyroid hormone and TSH levels in hypothyroid patients.
    • To determine if pituitary-thyroid axis function is modified in hypothyroid individuals during caloric restriction.

    Main Methods:

    • Studied 5 untreated and 10 T4-treated hypothyroid patients.
    • Measured serum T4, T3, and TSH concentrations before and after 7 days of 500-calorie daily restriction.
    • Assessed TSH response to TRH stimulation.
