Summary

Post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) nurses reduced blood draw hemolysis by changing collection practices. This quality improvement initiative significantly lowered rates from 5.2% to 1.97%.

Background:

High hemolysis rates (5%) in postanesthesia care units (PACUs) contrasted with other hospital areas (1.1%).
Preliminary data indicated ~60% of blood samples were drawn via arterial lines in the PACU.

Purpose of the Study:

To enhance blood collection techniques within the PACU to decrease hemolysis.
To empower PACU nurses to spearhead this unit-based quality improvement project.

Main Methods:

Utilized the Deming model and Plan-Do-Check-Act framework for process improvement.
Modified specimen collection protocols, emphasizing manual aspiration from arterial lines.
Collected hemolysis data from laboratory reports and electronic medical records.

Main Results:

Implemented changes led to a significant reduction in blood specimen hemolysis from 5.2% to 3.6%.
Continued decline observed two years post-implementation, with rates reaching 1.97%.

Conclusions:

A nurse-led, interdisciplinary initiative successfully identified and implemented evidence-based strategies.
The project effectively reduced blood specimen hemolysis in the PACU.
