States with strict abortion bans offer less support for children and families. This study reveals that restrictive abortion policies correlate with weaker public health and social programs, disproportionately affecting vulnerable populations.
Area of Science:
- Public Health
- Health Policy
- Social Science
Background:
- The US Supreme Court's 2022 decision in Dobbs v Jackson Women's Health Organization overturned nearly 50 years of constitutionally protected abortion access.
- Current legislation includes 14 states with total abortion bans and 7 states with bans at 6-18 weeks gestation.
- Existing research indicates abortion restrictions disproportionately impact minoritized and low-socioeconomic status individuals, exacerbating disparities.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the association between state abortion legislation and the availability of public support systems for children, women, and families.
- To determine if states with restrictive abortion policies provide adequate post-conception support.
Main Methods:
- Analysis of state-level abortion legislation enacted after the Dobbs decision.
- Assessment of state-based policies and programs offering medical and social support for families.
- Comparative analysis between states with restrictive abortion laws and their support infrastructure.
Main Results:
- States implementing the most restrictive abortion bans exhibit the least comprehensive public infrastructure for family support.
- A significant inverse correlation was found between abortion restriction severity and the inclusivity of social and medical support programs.
- Findings challenge the assertion that abortion restrictions adequately protect children, women, and families.
Conclusions:
- States with stringent abortion bans fail to provide robust support systems for the populations they claim to protect.
- The study highlights critical gaps in public infrastructure, particularly in states with severe abortion restrictions.
- Further advocacy is recommended to address these disparities and improve support for vulnerable families.
