Background:

Trauma nursing quality is intrinsically linked to the core competency of trauma advanced practice nurses (APNs).
Assessing and enhancing APN core competency is crucial for improving trauma care outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

To develop and validate an instrument for measuring the core competency of trauma APNs.
To examine the psychometric properties of the newly developed scale.

Main Methods:

A cross-sectional psychometric validation study was conducted.
The Simplified Chinese Trauma Advanced Practice Nurses' Core Competency Scale (TAPNCCS-SC) was developed through a five-step process including item generation, content validation, pilot testing, and psychometric evaluation.
Data were collected from 762 trauma nurses across 14 provinces in China.

Main Results:

The TAPNCCS-SC, comprising 34 items across three dimensions, demonstrated strong psychometric properties.
Confirmatory factor analysis confirmed an acceptable three-factor model with high explained variance (81.86%).
The scale exhibited excellent reliability (Cronbach's alpha=0.991, split-half=0.945) and validity (AVE=0.784-0.804, CR=0.974-0.980).

Conclusions:

The TAPNCCS-SC is a reliable and valid instrument for assessing trauma APN core competency.
This scale can guide nursing managers in developing targeted training programs.
Enhancing trauma APN core competency is expected to elevate the overall quality of trauma nursing care.
