Sleep problems significantly increase the likelihood of experiencing long COVID symptoms, including altered sensitivity and respiratory issues. This study highlights a strong association between sleep disturbances and long COVID prevalence in southern Brazil.
Area of Science:
- Public Health
- Epidemiology
- Sleep Medicine
Background:
- Long COVID, a complex condition following SARS-CoV-2 infection, presents a wide range of persistent symptoms.
- Sleep disturbances are frequently reported post-COVID-19 but their association with the spectrum of long COVID symptoms requires further investigation.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the association between sleep problems and the presence of long COVID symptoms.
- To determine the prevalence of long COVID and sleep problems in a southern Brazilian population.
Main Methods:
- A cross-sectional study utilizing data from the SULcovid-19 survey in Rio Grande, RS, Brazil.
- Poisson and multinomial regression analyses were employed to assess the relationship between sleep problems and 18 long COVID symptoms, adjusting for multiple covariates.
- Data from 2919 adults and older adults were analyzed.
Main Results:
- The prevalence of long COVID was 48.3%, and sleep problems were reported by 41.2% of the sample.
- Individuals with sleep problems showed a significantly higher likelihood of experiencing altered sensitivity (PR 3.27), nasal congestion (PR 2.75), musculoskeletal symptoms (PR 1.75), and respiratory issues (PR 1.58).
- Sleep problems were associated with having one or more long COVID symptoms (PR 1.27).
Conclusions:
- Sleep problems are strongly associated with an increased likelihood and number of long COVID symptoms.
- Public health strategies addressing sleep quality may be crucial in managing long COVID.
- Further research is warranted to explore the causal mechanisms linking sleep disturbances and long COVID.
