Gyroscope-assisted CT-guided needle puncture (GAP) significantly improves accuracy and target hit rate compared to free hand puncture (FHP). This inexpensive method enhances CT-guided procedures without increasing procedure time.
Area of Science:
- Medical Imaging
- Interventional Radiology
- Surgical Navigation
Background:
- CT-guided needle punctures are crucial for biopsies and interventions.
- Free hand puncture (FHP) techniques can be challenging, especially for complex trajectories.
- Improving accuracy and efficiency in CT-guided procedures is an ongoing area of research.
Purpose of the Study:
- To compare the efficacy of gyroscope-assisted CT-guided needle puncture (GAP) against free hand puncture (FHP).
- To evaluate the impact of a novel gyroscope guidance system on puncture accuracy and success rates in a phantom model.
Main Methods:
- A low-cost gyroscope system was attached to standard puncture needles.
- 18 radiologists performed punctures on three targets with varying difficulty in a biopsy phantom using both FHP and GAP techniques.
- Hit rate, needle tip distance to target, and procedure time were measured and compared between the two methods.
Main Results:
- GAP achieved a significantly higher hit rate (61.1%) compared to FHP (37%) (p=0.002).
- The mean distance from the needle tip to the lesion center was significantly smaller with GAP (7.49 mm) versus FHP (13.37 mm) (p<0.001).
- Procedure time was not significantly different between GAP and FHP (p=0.362).
Conclusions:
- Gyroscope guidance enhances CT-guided needle puncture accuracy and success rates.
- The GAP technique is a cost-effective and easily implementable solution for improving interventional procedures.
- This method offers improved precision without extending procedure duration, benefiting patient outcomes.
