Motion of a Projectile01:23

Motion of a Projectile

744
Projectile motion becomes evident when a player kicks the ball into the air. The launch angle, or the angle at which the ball is kicked, plays a crucial role in determining the trajectory of the projectile. As the ball soars through the air, influenced solely by gravity, its motion can be dissected into two independent velocity components: the horizontal and the vertical.
Horizontal motion, governed by the initial kick, maintains a constant velocity throughout the flight of the soccer ball.

Variation01:19

Variation

6.8K
An important characteristic of any set of data is the variation in the data. In some data sets, the data values are concentrated closely near the mean; in other data sets, the data values are more widely spread out from the mean. The most common measure of variation, or spread, is the standard deviation, which is the square root of variance.
When independent and dependent variables are plotted on a scatter plot, the slope of a line is a value that describes the rate of change between the two...

Projectile Motion: Equations

10.2K
Projectile motion is commonly observed in our day-to-day life. For example, a basketball thrown by a player, an arrow shot from a bow, and kids jumping into the pool, all undergo projectile motion.
Any projectile motion problem can be solved by using the following strategy:

Kinematic Equations: Problem Solving

12.0K
When analyzing one-dimensional motion with constant acceleration, the problem-solving strategy involves identifying the known quantities and choosing the appropriate kinematic equations to solve for the unknowns. Either one or two kinematic equations are needed to solve for the unknowns, depending on the known and unknown quantities. Generally, the number of equations required is the same as the number of unknown quantities in the given example. Two-body pursuit problems always require two...

Area of Science:

  • Sports Science
  • Motor Control
  • Human Performance

Background:

  • Quiet eye (QE) is a visual fixation on a target before a critical action, linked to enhanced performance.
  • While QE is trainable, its direct predictive power for performance outcomes remains under investigation.
  • Understanding QE's predictive capacity is crucial for developing effective training interventions in sports.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To predict basketball shot outcomes (make or miss) using visuomotor control variables.
  • To investigate the predictive accuracy of different QE parameters and other shot-related variables.
  • To determine if QE can serve as a direct performance predictor in basketball.

Main Methods:

  • A decision tree classification approach was employed to predict shot outcomes.
  • Twelve basketball athletes performed 200 shots from various on-court locations while wearing mobile eye-tracking glasses.
  • Eight predictors, including shot location, arm extension time, and QE metrics (onset, offset, duration), were modeled using decision trees and random forests.

Main Results:

  • Decision tree models accurately predicted over 66% of successful shots and over 50% of missed shots.
  • Relative quiet eye duration emerged as the primary predictor of shot success.
  • Successful shots were associated with relative QE durations exceeding 18.4%.

Conclusions:

  • Quiet eye duration is a significant predictor of basketball shot success.
  • Training interventions aimed at prolonging QE duration beyond 18% may enhance shooting performance.
  • These findings support the use of QE as a measurable target for improving athletic performance.
