Telepractice delivery of eclectic voice therapy for hyperfunctional voice disorder (HFVD) showed significant improvements in vocal fold function and reduced dysphonia. This approach offers a promising alternative treatment for individuals with HFVD.
Area of Science:
- Speech and Hearing Sciences
- Telemedicine
- Voice Disorders
Background:
- Hyperfunctional voice disorder (HFVD) affects individuals in vocally demanding professions, often with inflexible schedules.
- Eclectic voice therapy using combinatory approaches delivered via telepractice has the potential for improved efficiency.
Purpose of the Study:
- To implement an eclectic voice therapy program via telepractice for individuals with HFVD.
- To examine the efficacy of telepractice-delivered eclectic voice therapy in improving voice quality and function in HFVD patients.
Main Methods:
- 10 individuals with HFVD received 15 sessions of Comprehensive Voice Habilitation Program (CVHP) via Zoom over 3 weeks.
- Stroboscopy, CAPE-V, AVQI, and VHI-K were used for baseline, post-therapy, and follow-up assessments.
- Statistical analysis included Friedman's Two-way Analysis of Variance and Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test.
Main Results:
- Stroboscopy revealed improved vocal fold movement and reduced ventricular hyperadduction.
- Decreased CAPE-V and AVQI scores indicated a reduction in dysphonia severity.
- Reduced VHI-K scores suggested improvements in psychosocial aspects and quality of life.
Conclusions:
- Telepractice delivery of CVHP shows preliminary benefits for individuals with HFVD.
- Telepractice is a viable alternative treatment modality for managing hyperfunctional voice disorders.
