    Summary

Video-electroencephalography (EEG) telemetry and ambulatory EEG recordings aid in diagnosing unclear attacks and epilepsy. Over half of patients undergoing long-term EEG monitoring at National Hospital received clinically useful results.

    Area of Science:

    • Clinical Neurophysiology
    • Neurology

    Background:

    • Video-EEG telemetry and ambulatory EEG are crucial diagnostic tools.
    • National Hospital performs approximately 100 video-EEG and 40 ambulatory EEG procedures annually.
    • Patient selection targets those with uncertain attacks (55%) and established epilepsy (35%).

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the diagnostic utility of long-term EEG monitoring.
    • To describe the equipment used for long-term EEG.
    • To report on the outcomes of EEG monitoring in 1983.

    Main Methods:

    • Description of equipment for long-term EEG monitoring.
    • Analysis of patient data from 1983.
    • Categorization of patients based on diagnostic indications (uncertain attacks vs. established epilepsy).

    Main Results:

    • Clinically useful results were achieved in over 50% of patients.
    • Detailed results from 1983 are presented.
    • High volume of procedures performed annually.

    Conclusions:

    • Long-term EEG monitoring provides valuable diagnostic information.
    • The described methods and equipment are effective for patient evaluation.
    • EEG monitoring is a key investigation for patients with seizure disorders.
