Blind Procedures02:07

Blind Procedures

Ideally, the people who observe and record the children’s behavior are unaware of who was assigned to the experimental or control group, in order to control for experimenter bias. Experimenter bias refers to the possibility that a researcher’s expectations might skew the results of the study. Remember, conducting an experiment requires a lot of planning, and the people involved in the research project have a vested interest in supporting their hypotheses. If the observers knew which child was...
Blinding01:11

Blinding

Blinding is a commonly used method of not telling participants which treatment a subject is receiving. Blinding is a critical part of a randomized control trial or RCT. It reduces the bias that affects the results. In an RCT, blinding is used in the form of a placebo. A placebo effect occurs when untreated subjects falsely believe they have received the treatment and report improved symptoms. A placebo or a dummy treatment is administered to subjects to negate the bias caused by such an effect.

Summary
This summary is machine-generated.

This study investigates autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunction in functional dysphonia (FD), finding it more prevalent than in healthy individuals. A novel ANS therapy shows promise for improving both voice and autonomic function in FD patients.

Area of Science:

  • Investigates the intersection of psychophysiology and voice disorders.
  • Focuses on autonomic nervous system (ANS) regulation and its impact on vocal health.
  • Contributes to understanding the underlying mechanisms of functional dysphonia (FD).

Background:

  • Functional dysphonia (FD) treatment often overlooks psychological factors and autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunction.
  • Conventional voice therapy (CVT) has variable success rates in treating FD.
  • FD significantly impacts quality of life and incurs healthcare costs, necessitating improved therapeutic approaches.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the prevalence of ANS dysfunction symptoms in FD patients versus healthy controls.
  • To evaluate a novel ANS therapy (HRV biofeedback) for FD, comparing it to CVT alone and CVT with ANS therapy.
  • To assess the effects of these therapies on both autonomic and voice function.

Main Methods:

  • A case-control study comparing physiological and psychological measures of ANS function in FD patients and controls.
  • A randomized controlled trial (RCT) assigning FD patients to ANS therapy, CVT, or a combination.
  • Standardized voice and autonomic assessments were conducted pre- and post-treatment by blinded assessors.

Main Results:

  • Patients with FD are expected to exhibit higher occurrences of ANS dysfunction symptoms compared to controls.
  • Physiological markers like lower heart rate variability (HRV) and higher skin conductance are hypothesized in FD patients.
  • The combined ANS therapy and CVT group is predicted to show the greatest improvement in voice function.

Conclusions:

  • Autonomic dysfunction, while recognized in psychology, is understudied in voice disorders like FD.
  • This research aims to provide physiological and psychological evidence linking ANS dysfunction to FD.
  • Findings are expected to offer new diagnostic and therapeutic insights for FD, improving patient outcomes and reducing healthcare burdens.
