Observational Studies01:11

Observational Studies

8.3K
Observational studies are a type of analytical study where researchers observe events without any interventions. In other words, the researcher does not influence the response variable or the experiment's outcome.
There are three types of observational studies – Prospective, retrospective, and cross-sectional.
Prospective Study
Prospective studies, also known as longitudinal or cohort studies, are carried out by collecting future data from groups sharing similar characteristics. One...

Cross-Sectional Research01:50

Cross-Sectional Research

11.3K
In cross-sectional research, a researcher compares multiple segments of the population at the same time. If they were interested in people's dietary habits, the researcher might directly compare different groups of people by age. Instead of following a group of people for 20 years to see how their dietary habits changed from decade to decade, the researcher would study a group of 20-year-old individuals and compare them to a group of 30-year-old individuals and a group of 40-year-old...

Longitudinal Research02:20

Longitudinal Research

11.9K
Sometimes we want to see how people change over time, as in studies of human development and lifespan. When we test the same group of individuals repeatedly over an extended period of time, we are conducting longitudinal research. Longitudinal research is a research design in which data-gathering is administered repeatedly over an extended period of time. For example, we may survey a group of individuals about their dietary habits at age 20, retest them a decade later at age 30, and then again...

Classification of Illness01:17

Classification of Illness

7.4K
The meaning of illness is individualized to each person who experiences an alteration in health. In contrast, disease is a medical term indicating a pathological change in the structure and function of the body or mind. It is a condition that has specific symptoms and boundaries.
An illness is a response to a disease in which the person's level of functioning is changed compared with a previous level. The general classification of illness includes acute and chronic.
Acute illness is severe...

Longitudinal Studies01:26

Longitudinal Studies

145
Longitudinal studies are also widely used in other medical and social science fields. For instance, in cardiovascular research, they can monitor patients' health over decades to identify risk factors for heart disease, such as high cholesterol or smoking, and evaluate the long-term effectiveness of preventive measures. Similarly, in mental health studies, researchers might follow individuals from adolescence into adulthood to understand the development and progression of conditions like...

Psychological and Sociocultural Causes of Schizophrenia01:29

Psychological and Sociocultural Causes of Schizophrenia

81
Schizophrenia, a complex psychiatric disorder, has been historically misunderstood. Early psychological theories attributed its origins to childhood trauma and unresponsive parenting. However, contemporary research largely rejects these notions, favoring the vulnerability-stress hypothesis. This model proposes that individuals with a genetic predisposition to schizophrenia may develop the disorder following exposure to significant environmental stressors. Notably, studies on high-risk...

    Summary

Specific personality traits, Harm Avoidance and Self-directedness, significantly predict functioning in psychiatric outpatients, overshadowing other factors like trauma and attachment.

    Area of Science:

    • Psychiatry and Psychology
    • Clinical Psychology
    • Mental Health Research

    Background:

    • Functioning in psychiatric outpatients is influenced by various factors.
    • Understanding these predictors is crucial for effective treatment.
    • Previous research has explored personality traits, attachment, trauma, and comorbidity.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To identify predictors of functioning in psychiatric outpatients.
    • To assess the significance of these predictors individually and in combination.
    • To quantify the collective predictive power of these factors on functioning.

    Main Methods:

    • Cross-sectional study of 137 psychiatric outpatients with bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder, or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
    • Utilized semi-structured diagnostic interviews and assessments of functioning, personality traits, attachment style, and childhood trauma.
    • Employed linear regression models to analyze relationships between variables and functioning.

    Main Results:

    • Most temperament/character traits and attachment dimensions predicted impaired functioning.
    • Comorbidity and childhood trauma did not significantly predict functioning.
    • In multiple regression, only Harm Avoidance and Self-directedness remained significant predictors, explaining one-third of the variance.

    Conclusions:

    • Harm Avoidance and Self-directedness are key personality trait predictors of functioning in psychiatric outpatients.
    • These personality traits are more influential than attachment, comorbidity, or childhood trauma.
    • Findings highlight the critical role of specific personality traits in predicting patient functioning.
