The Complete Health Improvement Program (CHIP) significantly improved cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors in older adults. These positive lifestyle changes were comparable to those in younger participants, supporting CHIP for geriatric CVD prevention.
Area of Science:
- Cardiology
- Geriatrics
- Preventive Medicine
Background:
- Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a leading concern in the geriatric population.
- Intensive therapeutic lifestyle modification programs (ITLMPs) show success in reducing CVD risk factors.
- Limited research exists on ITLMP effectiveness specifically in older adults.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the impact of the Complete Health Improvement Program (CHIP) on CVD risk factors in geriatric participants (aged 65+).
- To compare the effectiveness of CHIP in older adults versus younger participants.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective analysis of data from 26 CHIP classes (2011-2017) in Athens, Ohio.
- Key variables analyzed: BMI, blood pressure, total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL, HDL, blood glucose, and exercise level.
- Comparison of outcomes between geriatric and younger participant groups.
Main Results:
- Geriatric CHIP participants showed significant improvements in BMI, BP, TC, LDL, HDL, BG, and exercise level (P < .001).
- The magnitude of these improvements in the geriatric group was equivalent to that observed in younger participants (P > .05).
Conclusions:
- The CHIP program effectively reduces CVD risk factors in the geriatric population.
- CHIP is a viable option for CVD prevention and treatment strategies targeting older adults.
