Area of Science:

  • Mental Health
  • Public Health
  • Health Services Research

Background:

  • Community health workers (CHWs) are effective in delivering behavioral activation (BA), particularly in low-resource settings.
  • Southwest Montana faces a shortage of Spanish-speaking mental health counselors, highlighting the need for accessible care models.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To test the feasibility and acceptability of a care model using CHWs to deliver BA.
  • To assess the preliminary efficacy of CHW-delivered BA for depression.

Main Methods:

  • Two CHWs were trained in BA methodology.
  • Twenty participants screening positive for depression received a 12-week telephone-based BA intervention.
  • Feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy were measured using participant retention, adherence, Beck Depression Inventory scores, and therapeutic alliance.

Main Results:

  • Twelve participants completed the study, engaging in at least 10 BA sessions and all study measures.
  • Data analysis was completed in August 2024, with manuscript submission anticipated in October 2024.

Conclusions:

  • This study's findings will guide future research on implementing evidence-based mental health interventions in resource-limited settings.
  • The results are particularly relevant for serving Latino populations with limited English proficiency.
