Summary

This study found no significant difference in skin puncture force between taper point and reverse cutting needles, regardless of gauge size. Needle diameter directly correlated with the force required for skin penetration.

Background:

  • Reverse cutting needles are frequently used in cutaneous surgery.
  • Limited research exists on the skin puncture forces of modern surgical needles.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the puncture forces of taper point and reverse cutting needles.
  • To evaluate the impact of gauge size on needle puncture force.

Main Methods:

  • Human abdominal skin samples were used to test needle puncture forces.
  • Taper point (RB-1, TF, C-1) and reverse cutting (PS-2, P-3) needles of various gauges were tested.
  • An electronic force meter measured the force required for skin penetration.

Main Results:

  • Mean puncture force for taper needles: 1.00 N (RB-1), 0.74 N (TF), 0.48 N (C-1).
  • Mean puncture force for reverse cutting needles: 0.95 N (PS-2), 0.60 N (P-3, 4-0), 0.51 N (P-3, 5-0).
  • A direct relationship was observed between needle diameter and puncture force for both geometries.

Conclusions:

  • No clinically significant difference in skin puncture force was found between taper point and reverse cutting needle geometries.
  • Needle diameter is a key factor influencing puncture force.
