    Background:

    • Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a complex autoimmune disorder.
    • The possibility of zoonotic transmission of SLE has been hypothesized.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate dogs owned by SLE patients for potential zoonotic markers.
    • To evaluate the hypothesis that SLE is a zoonosis.

    Main Methods:

    • Medical history and physical examinations were performed on 11 dogs.
    • Immunological investigations of blood and skin samples were conducted.
    • Results were compared to a control group of dogs.

    Main Results:

    • No findings supported the hypothesis that SLE is a zoonosis.
    • Immunological data from dogs did not indicate transmission from human SLE patients.

    Conclusions:

    • The study does not support the zoonotic hypothesis for systemic lupus erythematosus.
    • Further research may be needed to fully elucidate potential interspecies disease transmission dynamics.
