Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between mandibular bone quality, assessed by bone density (BD), and the volume of bone regeneration in the mandibular angle region after reduction mandibuloplasty.
  • To determine if bone density influences the regenerated angle area (VSA) and the regenerated outer cortex (VOC) volumes.

Main Methods:

  • Computed tomography (CT) images were used to determine bone density (BD) as grey levels immediately post-surgery.
  • Regenerated angle (VSA) and outer cortex (VOC) volumes were measured using CT data from immediate and follow-up scans.
  • Correlation analyses (Spearman and Pearson) were performed to assess the relationship between BD and the measured regeneration volumes.

Main Results:

  • A significant positive correlation was found between bone density (BD) and the volume of the regenerated angle area (VSA) (r = 0.5449, p < 0.0001).
  • A significant negative correlation was observed between bone density (BD) and the volume of the regenerated outer cortex (VOC) (r = -0.3501, p = 0.0171).
  • CT imaging provides a quantitative method for assessing mandibular bone quality.

Conclusions:

  • Mandibular bone density influences bone regeneration volumes differently in distinct areas of the mandibular angle post-reduction mandibuloplasty.
  • Higher bone density is associated with greater bone regeneration in the angle area but less in the outer cortex.
  • Slight over-grinding during surgery might be considered to mitigate potential secondary angulation, based on these findings.
