The Dementia Prevention and Risk Management Program for Aboriginal Australians (DAMPAA) trial investigates a culturally tailored intervention to reduce dementia risk factors in older Aboriginal people. Findings will inform future dementia prevention strategies for Indigenous Australians.
Area of Science:
- Public Health
- Gerontology
- Indigenous Health
Background:
- Dementia affects Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples disproportionately, with up to 45% of cases linked to modifiable risk factors.
- There is a need for culturally appropriate interventions to address cognitive decline in older Indigenous Australians.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the effectiveness of the Dementia Prevention and Risk Management Program for Aboriginal Australians (DAMPAA).
- To reduce cognitive decline, functional impairment, and manage risk factors in older Aboriginal people through a culturally tailored program.
Main Methods:
- A multisite, randomized controlled trial involving community-dwelling Aboriginal people aged 45-90 years.
- Participants are randomized to either a 12-month group program (exercise, health education, medication reviews) or usual care.
- Outcomes include cognitive function (KICA-Cog), daily function (KICA-ADL), and quality of life, with secondary outcomes on cardiovascular risk factors, falls, and mortality.
Main Results:
- *This section will be populated once the study results are available.*
Conclusions:
- *This section will be populated once the study results are available.*
