Endoscopic Procedures III: Video Capsule Endoscopy

Capsule endoscopy, or wireless or video capsule endoscopy, is a diagnostic procedure for examining the entire gastrointestinal tract. Patients swallow a capsule about the size of a vitamin tablet. The capsule is equipped with a transmitter, a battery, an LED light source, and a color video camera to capture images throughout the gastrointestinal tract. This procedure is particularly useful for diagnosing conditions such as Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, tumors, polyps, ulcers, unexplained...

Area of Science:

  • Minimally invasive surgery
  • Gastroenterology
  • Bariatric interventions

Background:

  • Endoscopic suturing is versatile, used for tissue approximation, stent anchoring, and hemostasis.
  • Primary endobariatric procedures utilize endoscopic suturing for gastric remodeling to achieve weight loss.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review current and emerging endoscopic suturing devices for weight loss via gastric remodeling.
  • To highlight potential future technologies in endobariatric interventions.

Main Methods:

  • Review of current literature and device development in endoscopic suturing for bariatric procedures.
  • Identification of key devices in design or clinical trials for weight loss.

Main Results:

  • The OverStitch endoscopic suturing system is the only currently available device in the US.
  • Several novel devices, including USGI's platform, Endomina, and EndoZip, are in development for gastric remodeling.

Conclusions:

  • Emerging endoscopic suturing technologies show promise for weight loss through gastric remodeling.
  • These advancements may expand minimally invasive options for bariatric interventions.
