Background:

  • Electrical cardioversion (EC) is a key treatment for restoring normal sinus rhythm in atrial fibrillation (AF) patients.
  • Limited data exists on post-EC outcomes concerning the success of inpatient EC procedures.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the outcomes of inpatient electrical cardioversion (EC) for atrial fibrillation (AF).
  • To identify factors influencing EC success and assess the impact of EC failure on patient outcomes.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective study of 54 patients admitted for AF undergoing inpatient EC (2017-2021).
  • Collected demographic, clinical, biochemical, and echocardiographic data.
  • Analyzed 30-day readmissions and mortality as primary outcome events.

Main Results:

  • Unsuccessful EC was associated with older patient age and traditional cardiovascular risk factors.
  • Patients with unsuccessful EC showed significantly higher 30-day mortality (p < 0.01) and 30-day readmission rates (p < 0.01).
  • Higher mortality was also observed at 1 year (p < 0.01) for those with unsuccessful EC.

Conclusions:

  • Establishing a predictive model for successful EC remains challenging.
  • In-hospital EC failure places patients at high risk for adverse outcomes, including mortality and readmission within 30 days.
  • A multidisciplinary approach and individualized post-discharge care are essential for patients with unsuccessful EC.
