This case report details an extremely rare congenital anomaly: an unattached left atrial mitral valve cord. Advanced 3-dimensional transesophageal echocardiography (3D TEE) was crucial for diagnosis in a patient with dizziness.
Area of Science:
- Cardiology
- Congenital Heart Disease
- Medical Imaging
Background:
- Congenital anomalies of the mitral valve are rare.
- Left atrial mitral valve cords are exceptionally rare, often associated with mitral valve leaflets and mild regurgitation.
- Independent documentation of this anomaly is scarce.
Observation:
- A 51-year-old patient presented with dizziness.
- Initial transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) presented diagnostic challenges.
- Advanced 3-dimensional transesophageal echocardiography (3D TEE) was utilized for detailed cardiac assessment.
Findings:
- A unique, unattached left atrial mitral valve cord was identified.
- This finding represents an independent congenital anomaly.
- The anomaly was accurately mapped using 3D TEE.
Implications:
- Highlights the importance of advanced imaging in diagnosing rare cardiac anomalies.
- Contributes to the limited literature on isolated left atrial mitral valve cords.
- Enhances understanding of congenital mitral valve variations and their clinical presentation.
