Deep brain stimulation (DBS) improved how patients with Parkinson disease (PD) experienced their valued personal characteristics. Both patients and their care partners reported more positive manifestations of these traits after DBS.
Area of Science:
- Neuroscience
- Psychology
- Medical Technology
Background:
- Deep brain stimulation (DBS) improves motor function and quality of life in Parkinson disease (PD) patients.
- Potential impacts of DBS on self-perception and personality warrant investigation.
- Previous studies have methodological limitations in assessing DBS effects on personal characteristics.
Purpose of the Study:
- To determine if DBS is associated with changes in personally meaningful characteristics for PD patients.
- To assess the manifestation of individually identified personal characteristics post-DBS.
Main Methods:
- A cohort study involving 52 PD patients and their care partners.
- Visual analog scales (VAS) measured the manifestation of top 3 feared-lost personal characteristics before and 6/12 months after DBS.
- Qualitative content analysis of patient and care partner feedback.
Main Results:
- Patients and care partners reported increased manifestation of valued characteristics after DBS (p < .001).
- Individual-level analyses showed scores remained stable or increased for most participants.
- Patient and care partner reports of change were correlated, indicating agreement.
Conclusions:
- DBS is associated with greater, positive manifestations of individually identified characteristics in PD patients.
- Findings suggest DBS may positively influence self-perception related to valued traits.
- Results can inform decision-making for PD patients considering DBS.
