Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between problematic gaming (PG) and psychotic experiences (PEs) in a large Brazilian community sample.
  • To test the hypothesis that adolescents with PG are more likely to report PEs compared to those without PG.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study was conducted on a subsample of 1616 adolescents (aged 13-21) from a Brazilian cohort.
  • Participants were assessed for PG using the Game Addiction Scale, categorizing them into no PG, PG, or gaming addiction (GA).
  • Linear regression analyses, adjusted for covariates including other psychiatric diagnoses, were used to examine the association between PG, GA, and PEs.

Main Results:

  • 9.5% of participants reported PG, and 2.7% had gaming addiction (GA).
  • Adolescents with PG showed significantly higher levels of PEs compared to those without PG, even after controlling for sociodemographic variables and other psychiatric diagnoses (b=0.96, P=0.017).

  • Problematic gaming is significantly associated with psychotic experiences in adolescents, independent of other psychiatric conditions.
  • These findings suggest potential shared neurobiological or behavioral pathways underlying both PG and PEs.
  • Further research is warranted to explore these shared mechanisms and their clinical implications.
