Distribution Reliability and Automation01:25

Distribution Reliability and Automation

107
Distribution reliability in electrical power systems is critical for ensuring an uninterrupted power supply to consumers at minimal cost. According to IEEE Standard Terms, reliability is the probability that a device will function without failure over a specified time period or amount of usage. For electric power distribution, this translates to maintaining continuous power supply and addressing customer concerns over power outages. Several indices, as defined by IEEE Standard 1366-2012, are...

Circuit Terminology01:14

Circuit Terminology

623
An electrical network is a system composed of interconnected elements, such as resistors, capacitors, inductors, and voltage or current sources. Unlike a circuit, an electrical network does not necessarily form a closed path. In other words, while all circuits can be considered networks due to their interconnected nature, not every network qualifies as a circuit.
A circuit, on the other hand, is also an interconnected system of electrical elements but must contain one or more closed paths.

Maximum Power Flow and Line Loadability01:23

Maximum Power Flow and Line Loadability

97
The maximum power flow for lossy transmission lines is derived using ABCD parameters in phasor form. These parameters create a matrix relationship between the sending-end and receiving-end voltages and currents, allowing the determination of the receiving-end current. This relationship facilitates calculating the complex power delivered to the receiving end, from which real and reactive power components are derived.

Network Function of a Circuit01:25

Network Function of a Circuit

269
Frequency response analysis in electrical circuits provides vital insights into a circuit's behavior as the frequency of the input signal changes. The transfer function, a mathematical tool, is instrumental in understanding this behavior. It defines the relationship between phasor output and input and comes in four types: voltage gain, current gain, transfer impedance, and transfer admittance. The critical components of the transfer function are the poles and zeros.

Pilot and Numeric Relaying01:21

Pilot and Numeric Relaying

83
Pilot relaying is a type of differential protection used in power systems. It compares electrical quantities at the terminals of equipment via a communication channel instead of direct relay interconnection. This method is essential for transmission lines where the terminals are far apart, typically up to 80 km for lines with 69 to 115 kV ratings. Four types of communication channels are used for pilot relaying:

Boundary Conditions: Lossless Lines01:21

Boundary Conditions: Lossless Lines

88
Consider a single-phase, two-wire, lossless transmission line terminated by an impedance at the receiving end and a source with Thevenin voltage and impedance at the sending end. The line, with length, has a surge impedance and wave velocity determined by the line's inductance and capacitance.
At the receiving end, the boundary condition states that the voltage equals the product of the receiving-end impedance and current. This relationship is expressed as a function of the incident and...

Summary

Consumers desire broader definitions of health insurance network adequacy beyond just provider numbers and travel distance. They support factors like cultural competency and inclusive care, indicating a need for more equitable healthcare access.

Area of Science:

  • Health Services Research
  • Consumer Health Preferences
  • Health Equity

Background:

  • Managed care arrangements are prevalent in American health insurance.
  • Network adequacy regulations aim to ensure patient access to care.
  • Consumer perspectives have been largely absent from network adequacy discussions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess US adult consumer preferences for network adequacy definitions.
  • To evaluate support for definitions promoting health equity and reducing disparities.
  • This study is the first to explore consumer views on network adequacy.

Main Methods:

  • A large, diverse survey of 4008 US adults was conducted.
  • Respondents were queried on their abstract perceptions of adequate provider networks.
  • Analyses utilized ordinary least squares regression with survey weights and t tests.

Main Results:

  • Consumers strongly supported standard adequacy measures (provider numbers, travel distance).
  • Majorities favored expanded definitions including public transit, cultural competency, and LGBT+ inclusive care.
  • Demographic and experiential factors influenced support for broader definitions.

Conclusions:

  • Consumer conceptions of network adequacy are extensive and multifaceted.
  • Future research should explore consumer trade-offs in resource-limited environments.
  • Further investigation into provider and insurance carrier perceptions is warranted.
