Local Anesthetics: Clinical Application as Intravenous Regional Anesthesia

377
Intravenous regional anesthesia or the Bier block technique is used to anesthetize a specific limb or extremity. It uses exsanguinated or blood-drained vessels to transport local anesthetics or LAs to the peripheral nerve trunks. Lidocaine without vasoconstrictors like epinephrine is most commonly used for this technique. Other drugs used are prilocaine, ropivacaine, and chloroprocaine. Bupivacaine is not recommended for this technique due to its high cardiac toxicity.

Summary

Submental liposuction, a minimally invasive procedure, offers efficient tissue volume reduction for facial rejuvenation. Despite not being traditionally viewed as non-invasive, its high efficacy and minimal complications support its consideration.

Area of Science:

  • Plastic Surgery
  • Dermatology
  • Aesthetic Medicine

Background:

  • Facial rejuvenation increasingly utilizes non-invasive treatments.
  • Few treatments effectively reduce submental tissue volume.
  • Submental liposuction is not typically classified as non-invasive.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate submental liposuction as a minimally invasive facial rejuvenation technique.
  • To assess the efficacy and complication profile of submental liposuction.
  • To advocate for considering submental liposuction as a non-invasive option.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 695 patients operated by the first author.
  • Procedures performed under local anesthesia between October 2020 and August 2022.

Main Results:

  • High patient volume (over 600 cases) with minimal complications.
  • The primary complication is irregularity, manageable with massage and ultrasound therapy.

Conclusions:

  • Submental liposuction demonstrates significant efficiency in facial rejuvenation.
  • Low complication rates and high efficacy support its consideration as a non-invasive treatment option.
  • The procedure offers a favorable risk-benefit profile for patients seeking volume reduction.
