Factors Affecting Activity Coefficient01:17

Factors Affecting Activity Coefficient

769
The extended Debye-Hückel equation indicates that the activity coefficient of an ion in an aqueous solution at 25°C depends on three partially interdependent properties: the ionic strength of the solution, the charge of the ion, and the ion size.
The activity coefficient value for an ion is close to one when the solution has almost zero ionic strength, i.e., when the solution shows close to ideal behavior. As the ionic strength of the solution increases from 0 to 0.1 mol/L, a...

Probability Histograms01:17

Probability Histograms

11.1K
A probability histogram is a visual representation of a probability distribution. Similar a typical histogram, the probability histogram consists of contiguous (adjoining) boxes. It has both a horizontal axis and a vertical axis. The horizontal axis is labeled with what the data represents. The vertical axis is labeled with probability. Each rectangular bar in the histogram is 1 unit wide, which suggests that the area under each bar equals the probability, P(x), where x is 1, 2, 3, and so on.

Otto and Diesel Cycle01:27

Otto and Diesel Cycle

1.5K
An Otto engine is a four-stroke engine that uses a mixture of gasoline and air as the working fuel. The fuel is injected into the cylinder, and the piston is moved completely down so that the cylinder is at maximum volume. By moving the piston up, adiabatic compression takes place. The spark plug ignites the gasoline-air mixture, and the burning fuel adds heat to the system at a constant volume. The heated mixture expands adiabatically and gets further cooled by exhausting heat, and this cyclic...

Social Traps01:41

Social Traps

22.3K
Social traps are negative situations where people get caught in a direction or relationship that later proves to be unpleasant, with no easy way to back out of or avoid. The concept was orignally introduced by John Platt who applied psychology to Garrett Hardin's "Tragedy of the Commons", where in New England herd owners could let their cattle graze in the common ground. This situation seems like a good idea, but an individual could have an advantage. If they owned...

Social Proof00:52

Social Proof

27.6K
Social proof is a form of persuasion based on comparison and conformity. People compare their behavior and actions to what others are doing and will change to conform to do what their peers do.

Distributed Loads01:19

Distributed Loads

518
Distributed loads are a common type of load that engineers and scientists encounter in various practical situations. Distributed loads often refer to a type of load spread over a surface or a structure and can be modeled as continuous force per unit area.
For example, consider a bookshelf filled with books stacked vertically adjacent to each other. The weight of the books is evenly distributed over the length of the shelf. As a result, the pressure at different locations on the surface of the...

Summary

Predicting bike arrivals and departures in urban bike sharing systems (BSS) is key for efficient operations. This study found that temporal factors like month and weather conditions significantly influence bike sharing demand, more than station location features.

Area of Science:

  • Urban Planning
  • Transportation Science
  • Data Science

Background:

  • Bike Sharing Systems (BSS) are increasingly popular for sustainable urban transport.
  • Customer satisfaction in BSS relies on bike and dock availability, necessitating efficient rebalancing operations.
  • Predicting user demand is crucial for effective BSS management and urban transport planning.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify key features influencing bike arrivals and departures in Barcelona's BSS.
  • To evaluate the predictive power of temporal, weather, and spatial features on BSS demand.
  • To enhance the operational efficiency of BSS through improved demand forecasting.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized a Random Forest model for predictive analysis.
  • Analyzed a one-year dataset of bike sharing activity in Barcelona.
  • Incorporated features including weather data, station characteristics, and nearby spatial facilities.

Main Results:

  • Temporal features, specifically months, and weather variables like temperature and pressure, were strong predictors of bike arrivals and departures.
  • Holidays and station altitude also showed significant influence on demand.
  • Spatial features within a 200-meter radius had a minimal impact on prediction accuracy.

Conclusions:

  • Demand forecasting for BSS can be significantly improved by focusing on temporal and weather-related factors.
  • While station characteristics matter, their spatial context appears less critical than dynamic environmental and temporal influences.
  • Optimizing BSS rebalancing strategies requires prioritizing predictions based on identified key features.
