Metacognition01:26

Metacognition

142
Metacognition is a conscious process where individuals are aware of their cognitive and executive processes, such as planning before solving a problem or self-monitoring during reading. For instance, a writer may need help with composing a piece. The situation involves a writer who is working on a piece of writing, but while doing so, they realize that something is missing. They notice that their characters lack depth or details. This realization occurs because the writer is reflecting on their...

Social Facilitation01:04

Social Facilitation

31.9K
Not all intergroup interactions lead to negative outcomes. Sometimes, being in a group situation can improve performance. Social facilitation occurs when an individual performs better when an audience is watching than when the individual performs the behavior alone. This typically occurs when people are performing a task for which they are skilled.

Summary

High-performing young soccer players demonstrate superior self-regulated learning (SRL) skills, particularly in planning, compared to lower performers. Coaches should focus on metacognitive and motivational strategies to enhance player development.

Area of Science:

  • Sports Science
  • Educational Psychology
  • Motor Learning

Background:

  • Self-regulated learning (SRL) is crucial for skill acquisition in athletes.
  • Traditional assessments often focus on competitive level, potentially overlooking other performance factors.
  • Understanding SRL differences beyond competitive tiers is vital for targeted coaching.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate self-regulated learning (SRL) in young soccer players across different performance levels.
  • To determine if SRL differs between high-performing (HP) and low-performing (LP) players, independent of competitive level.
  • To identify specific SRL components that differentiate player performance.

Main Methods:

  • One hundred twenty-four U14-U17 soccer players were assessed.
  • Players were categorized as LP or HP based on a 90° change of direction dribbling test performance.
  • The self-regulation of learning-self-report scale for sport practice (SRL-SRS-SP) was administered.

Main Results:

  • HP players scored significantly higher in overall SRL compared to LP players (p=0.015).
  • HP players demonstrated significantly higher planning scores than LP players (p=0.011).
  • No significant differences were found in reflection, effort, self-efficacy, or self-supervision subscales.

Conclusions:

  • High-performing soccer players exhibit enhanced engagement in the learning process and superior planning abilities.
  • Competitive level may not be the sole determinant of SRL differences in young athletes.
  • Strength and conditioning coaches should prioritize metacognitive and motivational components to improve technical and physical performance.
