Summary

Emergency physicians (EPs) can now confidently perform slit-lamp exams after completing a simulation-based mastery learning curriculum. This training improved competency and confidence, enabling EPs to teach junior learners about eye emergencies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and evaluate an interdisciplinary, simulation-based mastery learning (SBML) curriculum for emergency physicians (EPs) on slit-lamp examination.
  • To enhance EPs' procedural competency and confidence in diagnosing and treating ophthalmologic emergencies.
  • To assess the curriculum's effectiveness in preparing EPs to train junior learners.

Main Methods:

  • An SBML curriculum using multimodal learning was implemented at a tertiary academic center.
  • EPs demonstrated initial competency, reviewed content, and underwent hands-on training with ophthalmology attendings.
  • Procedural mastery was assessed via a checklist and a >90% passing score requirement.

  • All 15 enrolled EPs completed the curriculum and final exam.
  • Pre- and post-curriculum checklist scores significantly improved (average increase of 7 points, P=.002).

Conclusions:

  • The SBML program effectively trained EPs in comprehensive slit-lamp examinations.
  • The curriculum demonstrated promising results for downstream education of junior medical professionals.
  • Institutions are encouraged to adopt SBML for procedural training and interdisciplinary education initiatives.
