Ankle Joint01:10

Ankle Joint

1.5K
The ankle is formed by the talocrural joint (crural = leg). It consists of the articulations between the talus bone of the foot and the distal ends of the tibia and fibula of the leg. The superior aspect of the talus bone is square-shaped and has three areas of articulation. The top of the talus articulates with the inferior tibia. This is the portion of the ankle joint that carries the body weight between the leg and foot. The sides of the talus are firmly held in position by the articulations...

Summary
This summary is machine-generated.

Ankle osteoarthritis impacts younger adults, affecting quality of life and work. Ankle arthrodesis is a reliable surgical option, especially where advanced implants are limited.

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedics
  • Rheumatology

Background:

  • Ankle osteoarthritis often results from trauma and affects a younger demographic.
  • This condition significantly impairs patients' quality of life and work capacity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the pathophysiology, clinical presentation, and surgical management of ankle osteoarthritis.
  • To emphasize ankle arthrodesis as a primary surgical treatment, particularly in resource-limited settings.

Main Methods:

  • Comprehensive review of clinical presentation and diagnostic methods.
  • Analysis of conservative and surgical treatment options for ankle osteoarthritis.
  • Focus on ankle arthrodesis as a joint-sacrificing procedure.

Main Results:

  • Ankle osteoarthritis requires thorough evaluation for severity and deformity assessment.
  • Ankle arthrodesis provides a pain-free, plantigrade foot and is a time-tested procedure.
  • Ankle arthroplasty is an emerging alternative, but arthrodesis remains preferable in certain contexts.

Conclusions:

  • Accurate diagnosis and classification are crucial for guiding ankle osteoarthritis treatment.
  • Ankle arthrodesis is a proven and recommended surgical intervention for ankle arthritis.
  • Treatment decisions should consider patient factors and resource availability, favoring arthrodesis when necessary.
