Summary

Background:

Growing owner interest in homemade pet diets for nutritional control.
Limited scientific literature on long-term effects of homemade diets, especially in sick dogs.

Purpose of the Study:

To prospectively evaluate the effects of customized homemade diets on the health of healthy and sick dogs.
To assess owner-perceived changes in physical signs and symptoms.

Main Methods:

Prospective study involving 167 dogs (healthy and sick) on customized homemade diets.
Owner-reported data via questionnaires on diet adherence and health changes.
Median follow-up duration of 14 months.

Main Results:

104 dogs (62%) maintained the homemade diet.
Healthy dogs showed improved coat condition (70%) and reduced defecation frequency (47%).
Significant symptom improvement in pathological dogs: 95% with chronic enteropathy, 83% with dermatological issues, and 100% with both.

Conclusions:

Personalized, balanced homemade diets can significantly improve overall pet health.
Homemade diets are associated with notable symptom remission in dogs with chronic gastrointestinal and dermatological conditions.
