Disorders of the Nervous Tissue01:28

Disorders of the Nervous Tissue

1.1K
Nervous tissue is a vital component of the human body's communication system, enabling us to perceive and respond to stimuli. However, like all other tissues, it is vulnerable to disorders and diseases that can significantly impact our neurological functioning.
Homeostatic Imbalances:
Alzheimer's disease manifests as a gradual decline in memory and cognitive abilities, attributed to the buildup of amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles in the brain.
Parkinson's disease arises...

Personality Disorders: Paranoid and Schizoid

32
Personality disorders represent enduring cognition, affect, and behavior patterns that significantly deviate from societal norms. These maladaptive traits often lead to difficulties in various domains, including interpersonal relationships, occupational settings, and overall psychological well-being. Paranoid personality disorder and schizoid personality disorder are two distinct conditions marked by odd or eccentric behavior.

Psychosurgery

47
Psychosurgery, the surgical alteration or permanent removal of brain tissue to alleviate severe psychological conditions, stands as one of the most radical and controversial treatments in the history of mental health care. Its development and application have evolved significantly, marked by dramatic shifts in scientific understanding and ethical perspectives.
Historical Development of Psychosurgery

Personality Disorders: Narcissistic and Avoidant

31
Narcissistic and avoidant personality traits represent two contrasting patterns of behavior that significantly influence social interactions and self-perception. While individuals with narcissistic disorder seek admiration and validation, individuals with avoidant personality disorder withdraw due to fear of judgment.
Characteristics of Narcissistic Personality Disorder
Narcissistic individuals exhibit an inflated sense of self-importance and an excessive need for admiration. They are often...

Introduction to Psychological Disorders

245
Abnormal behavior, often referred to as mental illness, results from changes in brain function that influence thought patterns, behaviors, and social interactions. Psychologists and psychiatrists typically assess abnormal behavior using three primary criteria: deviance, maladaptation, and personal distress, particularly when these traits persist over long periods.
Deviant Behavior
Deviance in behavior refers to actions or thought patterns that significantly diverge from societal norms or...

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder01:30

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

47
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by persistent inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. It affects approximately 5-8% of children globally, with around 60-70% of cases persisting into adulthood. ADHD has significant implications for educational attainment, social interactions, and occupational success.
Diagnostic Criteria and Symptoms
To diagnose ADHD, symptoms must manifest before age 12 and be evident across multiple settings....

Summary

Many psychosomatic patients experience neuropsychological issues, particularly those with a history of childhood neurodevelopmental problems. Early identification of these minimal cerebral dysfunctions (MCD) is crucial for effective treatment and improved social participation.

Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Neuropsychology
  • Psychosomatic Medicine

Background:

  • Minimal cerebral dysfunctions (MCD) are common in mental disorders, often masked by other symptoms.
  • These dysfunctions can negatively impact illness progression and social functioning.
  • Limited data exists on MCD spectrum, prevalence, and consequences in chronic illness.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare current neuropsychological dysfunctions in psychosomatic patients with and without a history of childhood neurocognitive problems.
  • To investigate the prevalence of minimal cerebral dysfunctions (MCD) in psychosomatic inpatients.
  • To assess the relationship between early neurodevelopmental issues and current neuropsychological and psychosomatic symptoms.

Main Methods:

  • A convenience sample of 1453 psychosomatic inpatients was assessed.
  • The MCD scale was used to evaluate childhood neurodevelopmental issues and current neuropsychological dysfunctions.
  • Additional measures included the Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Self Rating Scale (ADHS-SB) and the Symptom Checklist 90 (SCL-90).

Main Results:

  • 8.87% of patients reported significant early neurodevelopmental problems.
  • Patients with a history of early neurodevelopmental problems showed significantly higher rates of MCD symptoms.
  • This group also reported significantly more general psychosomatic symptoms (SCL-90).

Conclusions:

  • Neuropsychological dysfunctions are prevalent in psychosomatic patients, especially those with early neurodevelopmental problems.
  • A comprehensive diagnostic approach, including MCD history and current dysfunctions, is necessary.
  • Addressing these impairments can improve participation and outcomes for affected individuals.
