Summary

Congenital Zika syndrome (CZS) can be diagnosed using 3D head imaging. The head height/head circumference ratio (HH/HC) shows higher sensitivity than head circumference alone for early CZS detection.

Background:

  • Congenital Zika syndrome (CZS) is a group of birth defects caused by Zika Virus (ZKV) infection during pregnancy.
  • ZKV infection can lead to fetal microcephaly, characterized by reduced brain volume and growth.
  • Current preliminary screening relies on head circumference measurements, which may lack sensitivity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify novel diagnostic characteristics of CZS using 3D head imaging.
  • To compare the diagnostic accuracy of specific 3D facial indices with traditional measurements.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of 3D head images from 35 ZKV-positive cases and 35 controls.
  • Comparison of facial anthropometric measurements, including centroid size, head circumference (HC), head height (HH), and chin height (CH).
  • Evaluation of ratios such as chin height/total facial height (CH/TFH) and head height/head circumference (HH/HC).

Main Results:

  • Significant differences were observed in centroid size, HC, HH, and CH between CZS and control groups.
