A new subunit vaccine targeting Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) shows efficacy in chickens. This avian vaccine, containing key MG proteins, significantly reduced pathogen recovery and respiratory disease signs when combined with a specific adjuvant.
Area of Science:
- Veterinary immunology
- Avian pathology
- Vaccine development
Background:
- Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) causes significant economic losses in poultry due to respiratory disease.
- Existing vaccines have limitations in efficacy, utility, and safety.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop and evaluate a novel subunit vaccine against Mycoplasma gallisepticum.
- To identify an effective adjuvant formulation for the subunit vaccine.
Main Methods:
- A subunit vaccine was formulated with recombinant MG proteins: GapA, CrmA, and VlhAs (3.03, 3.06, 4.07, 5.05).
- Chickens received a prime-boost vaccination with 50 µg/protein via subcutaneous injection.
- Vaccine efficacy was assessed against virulent MG strain Rlow challenge, comparing different adjuvant formulations.
Main Results:
- The subunit vaccine formulation with CpG oligodeoxynucleotide (CpG ODN 2007) significantly reduced MG recovery in chickens.
- This adjuvant formulation also led to significant reductions in tracheal pathology.
- Other adjuvants tested showed variable protection levels.
Conclusions:
- A rationally designed subunit vaccine is effective against Mycoplasma gallisepticum.
- The combination of the subunit vaccine with CpG ODN 2007 provides a safe and efficacious strategy against MG disease.
