Assessment of the Cardiovascular System I: Subjective Data

282
A thorough health history and physical assessment are essential for identifying cardiovascular disease (CVD) symptoms and distinguishing them from other health issues.
Initial Enquiry
Ask the patient about their primary concern and thoroughly explore all reported symptoms.
Medical History
Investigate past illnesses affecting the cardiovascular system, such as angina, anemia, rheumatic fever, congenital heart disease, stroke, thrombophlebitis, dysrhythmias, varicosities
Inquire about symptoms...

Summary

The Brief Older Adults' Physical Activity Questionnaire (BOPAQ) offers a practical method for assessing moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) in older adults. While it shows good reliability, some measurement errors were noted.

Area of Science:

  • Gerontology
  • Physical Activity Measurement
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Assessing physical activity in older adults is crucial for health.
  • Existing tools may not be efficient for quick assessments in community settings.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and validate the Brief Older Adults' Physical Activity Questionnaire (BOPAQ).
  • To assess moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) quickly in community-dwelling older adults.

Main Methods:

  • Cross-sectional study with 165 older participants.
  • BOPAQ assessed weekly MVPA duration.
  • Validity compared BOPAQ with ActiGraph and IPAQ-SF.
  • Reliability assessed using ICC and Bland-Altman plots.

Main Results:

  • BOPAQ showed reasonable correlation with accelerometer-based MVPA (rho=0.297).
  • Good test-retest reliability (ICC=0.78).
  • IPAQ-SF showed poor correlation with accelerometer-based MVPA (rho=0.139).
  • Bland-Altman plots indicated underestimation bias and heteroscedasticity.

Conclusions:

  • The BOPAQ is a viable tool for assessing MVPA in community-dwelling older adults.
  • Despite some measurement errors, its ease of use is advantageous.
