Background:

Mass shooting incidents in the US surged by 67.7% from 2018-2022.
Healthcare-associated shootings have also seen an increase.
The specific roles for acute and critical care nurses during mass shootings remain undefined in existing literature.

Purpose of the Study:

To define the roles of acute and critical care nurses during mass shooting incidents.
To establish best-practice recommendations for managing shooting incidents within hospital settings.

Main Methods:

An integrative review methodology, guided by Whittemore, Knafl, and Torraco.
Comprehensive literature search across Ovid MEDLINE, CINAHL, and Scopus databases.
Inclusion of publications focusing on acute/critical care nurses, mass shootings, and hospital environments.

Main Results:

27 articles were selected from 13,589 retrieved.
The highest evidence levels included expert consensus panels and simulated mass casualty incident response studies.
Qualitative studies analyzed nurses' experiences during mass casualty events.

Conclusions:

Identified key themes: prevention/preparedness, incident response, and recovery.
Emphasized the critical need for education and training for nurses on mass shooting response.
Recommended inclusion of Stop the Bleed techniques, run-hide-fight protocols, and nurse representation in hospital policy committees.
