    Summary

    Malignant hyperthermia susceptible pigs developed malignant hyperthermia (MH) when exposed to heat during anesthesia. Normal pigs tolerated the same heat exposure, suggesting heat intolerance may contribute to MH.

    Background:

    • Malignant hyperthermia (MH) is a severe hypermetabolic crisis.
    • Susceptibility to MH is a known genetic condition in certain pig breeds.
    • Environmental factors during anesthesia can influence MH episodes.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the role of heat stress in triggering malignant hyperthermia (MH).
    • To compare the response of malignant hyperthermia susceptible (MHS) pigs and normal pigs to controlled heating during anesthesia.

    Main Methods:

    • Three MHS pigs and three normal Danish landrace pigs were subjected to anesthesia using barbiturate and nitrous oxide.
    • Pigs were heated using a water-heated mattress, warm blankets, and warm intravenous saline.
    • Rectal temperature, hemodynamic, and metabolic parameters were monitored.

    Main Results:

    • MHS pigs developed typical malignant hyperthermia at a rectal temperature of 41.0 +/- 0.7°C.
    • Normal pigs tolerated the same temperature elevation without adverse effects.
    • Hemodynamic and metabolic changes during MH in pigs were consistent with previous findings.

    Conclusions:

    • Heat intolerance is a potential contributing factor in the development of malignant hyperthermia.
    • Environmental heat load can precipitate MH episodes in susceptible individuals.
    • This study highlights the importance of temperature regulation during anesthesia in MHS patients.
