Background:

Land use efficiency (LUE) is a key indicator for UN Sustainable Development Goal 11.3.1.
Understanding the drivers of LUE is critical for sustainable urban development and resource management.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the global impact of land property rights security on land use efficiency.
To analyze how legal origins (common vs. civil law) influence LUE.

Main Methods:

Utilized human-land change data from 165 countries (1990-2020).
Employed a fixed effects model with legal origins as an instrumental variable.

Main Results:

Secure land property rights significantly enhance LUE.
Common law countries demonstrate higher LUE compared to civil law countries.
Property rights stability encourages infrastructure investment and sustainable land management.

Conclusions:

Strengthening land property rights is vital for improving LUE and achieving Sustainable Development Goals.
