Background:

Investigated leadership practices and organizational structures of U.S. healthcare institutions.
Utilized U.S. News and World Report 2022-2023 hospital rankings for analysis.

Purpose of the Study:

To determine the association between specific leadership practices and organizational characteristics with U.S. News and World Report hospital rankings.
To identify key factors contributing to higher institutional rank in healthcare.

Main Methods:

Collected institutional variables: physician leadership, executive board size, physician board members, practice type, health system size, and for-profit status.
Established a rank order list using U.S. News and World Report scores.
Evaluated the strength of association between institutional variables and U.S. News and World Report rank.

Main Results:

Physician CEO leadership (OR 1.59) and group practice models (OR 1.25) were associated with higher rankings.
Larger flagship hospital bed count (OR 1.001) correlated with better U.S. News rankings.
For-profit status showed a negative association with institutional rank (OR 0.44).

Conclusions:

Physician leadership, group practice models, flagship hospital size, and tax status significantly influence U.S. News and World Report rankings.
Organizational structure and size of the flagship hospital are key determinants of healthcare institution rank.
For-profit status is a negative predictor of high rankings in major U.S. hospitals.
