Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if retrieval practice improves novel verb recall in children with DLD.
  • To assess the facilitative effect of retrieval practice on verb learning in varying sentence structures.
  • To compare verb learning and retrieval in children with DLD and typically developing (TD) peers.

Main Methods:

  • Fourteen children with DLD and 13 TD children learned 8 novel verbs over two sessions.
  • Verbs were presented in transitive sentences; half with spaced retrieval, half with repeated study.
  • Recall and use in the same and new sentence structures were tested post-session and 1 week later.

Main Results:

  • Both groups showed improved recall compared to previous studies.
  • TD children demonstrated benefits of spaced retrieval and flexible verb use.
  • Children with DLD showed retrieval benefits only short-term and struggled with morphological/syntactic flexibility.

Conclusions:

  • Spaced retrieval supports novel verb recall in children with DLD.
  • Children with DLD require additional interventions for morphological and syntactic verb flexibility.
  • Targeted strategies are needed to improve complex verb usage in children with DLD.
