Vasectomy is a surgical form of male sterilization that involves severing and sealing the vasa deferentia, preventing sperm from mixing with semen during ejaculation. Because a vasectomy does not impact the testes' ability to produce testosterone, hormone levels, libido, and sexual function generally remain unchanged. While vasectomy is highly effective in preventing pregnancy, with a success rate near 99.85%, rare cases of recanalization (spontaneous reconnection) can occur. Although...

Summary

Most individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) are sexually active. Many use less effective birth control methods, increasing unplanned pregnancy risks. Healthcare providers should initiate discussions on effective contraception for this population.

Area of Science:

  • Reproductive Health
  • Neurology
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Limited data exists on contraception for individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI).
  • Pregnancy in SCI can present complex medical challenges, underscoring the need for effective contraception.
  • Ensuring access to birth control is crucial for preventing unplanned pregnancies in this population.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the availability of contraception services for individuals with SCI.
  • To identify the specific contraception methods utilized by people with SCI.
  • To assess healthcare provider (HCP) initiation of birth control discussions with SCI patients.

Main Methods:

  • An international online questionnaire was distributed to gather demographic and reproductive history data.
  • 780 responses were collected from participants across 33 countries.
  • Descriptive and chi-squared statistical analyses were performed on the collected data.

Main Results:

  • 93.6% of participants reported being sexually active, with 60.7% active in the past year.
  • 63.6% of sexually active participants injured under 50 years old were offered birth control by an HCP.
  • Commonly used methods included condoms (44.5%), oral contraceptive pills (28.4%), withdrawal (20.1%), and intrauterine devices (20.1%).

Conclusions:

  • This study, the largest on SCI and contraception, confirms high sexual activity in this group.
  • Reliance on withdrawal and no contraception methods poses a significant risk for unplanned pregnancies.
  • Proactive, HCP-initiated conversations about sexual health and highly effective contraception are recommended.
