Atrial fibrillation (AF) affects 14% of cardiac surgery patients in Australia and New Zealand, a higher rate than previously thought. Surgical treatments for AF, including ablation and ligation, are significantly underutilized despite evidence of benefit.

- Despite strong recommendations and proven benefits, surgical interventions for AF, including left atrial appendage ligation and ablation, are significantly underutilized in this patient cohort.
