    International Journal of Oral Surgery
    |December 1, 1985

    Summary

Local anesthetic injections into the periodontal ligament of monkeys caused temporary cell damage. However, tissues fully recovered within one week, indicating no long-term adverse effects from these dental anesthesia techniques.

    Area of Science:

    • Dental research
    • Periodontology
    • Pharmacology

    Background:

    • Periodontal ligament injections are used for local anesthesia in dentistry.
    • Understanding the tissue response to these injections is crucial for patient safety.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the histopathological effects of local anesthetic solutions injected into the periodontal ligament in a primate model.
    • To compare the tissue reactions to different anesthetic agents and injection durations.

    Main Methods:

    • An experimental double-blind, cross-over study was conducted in monkeys.
    • Lidocaine with adrenaline and mepivacaine were administered via periodontal ligament injection over 5 or 20 seconds.
    • Histopathological analysis was performed immediately after injection and one week later.

    Related Experiment Videos

    Main Results:

    • Immediate histopathological analysis revealed cell damage in tissues adjacent to the injection sites.
    • Specimens examined one week post-injection showed complete normalization of the periodontal tissues.

    Conclusions:

    • Periodontal ligament injections of lidocaine with adrenaline and mepivacaine cause transient, localized cell damage.
    • The periodontal tissues demonstrate complete healing and recovery within one week following the injection procedure.
