Metacognition01:26

Metacognition

141
Metacognition is a conscious process where individuals are aware of their cognitive and executive processes, such as planning before solving a problem or self-monitoring during reading. For instance, a writer may need help with composing a piece. The situation involves a writer who is working on a piece of writing, but while doing so, they realize that something is missing. They notice that their characters lack depth or details. This realization occurs because the writer is reflecting on their...

Social Cognitive Perspective on Personality01:30

Social Cognitive Perspective on Personality

507
Social cognitive perspectives on personality emphasize the importance of conscious awareness, beliefs, expectations, and goals in shaping behavior. These perspectives incorporate behaviorist principles, such as learning through reinforcement and conditioning, but extend beyond them by highlighting human reasoning and planning. Unlike traditional behaviorist views, social cognitive theory focuses on how individuals reflect on their past experiences and plan for future outcomes by considering...

The Sense of Self: Reflected Self-Appraisal and Social Comparison

49.7K
According to Charles Cooley, we base our image on what we think other people see (Cooley 1902). We imagine how we must appear to others, then react to this speculation. We don certain clothes, prepare our hair in a particular manner, wear makeup, use cologne, and the like—all with the notion that our presentation of ourselves is going to affect how others perceive us. We expect a certain reaction, and, if lucky, we get the one we desire and feel good about it. But more than that, Cooley...

Cognitive Development During Adolescence01:18

Cognitive Development During Adolescence

47
During adolescence, individuals experience significant cognitive development that enhances their understanding of others' emotions and thoughts, known as cognitive empathy. This period is marked by an increased ability to adapt to others' perspectives and a more nuanced understanding of others' mental states, a skill that is foundational for social problem-solving and conflict avoidance. The development of cognitive empathy relies heavily on the theory of mind — the...

Empathy02:34

Empathy

9.6K
Some researchers suggest that altruism operates on empathy. Empathy is the capacity to understand another person’s perspective, to feel what he or she feels. An empathetic person makes an emotional connection with others and feels compelled to help (Batson, 1991). Empathy can be expressed in several ways, including cognitive, affective, and motor.

Attribution Theory00:56

Attribution Theory

12.9K
Behavior is a product of both the situation (e.g., cultural influences, social roles, and the presence of bystanders) and of the person (e.g., personality characteristics). Subfields of psychology tend to focus on one influence or behavior over others. Situationism is the view that our behavior and actions are determined by our immediate environment and surroundings. In contrast, dispositionism holds that our behavior is determined by internal factors (Heider, 1958).

Summary

Social perspective-taking enhances metacognitive efficiency. Sharing perception with others improves how accurately we judge our own perceptual abilities, especially when the other person is observing the same stimuli.

Area of Science:

  • Cognitive psychology
  • Social cognition
  • Metacognition

Background:

  • Social perspective-taking involves representing others' perceptual viewpoints.
  • Another person's gaze can influence our perception, but its effect on metacognition is unclear.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if social perspective-taking affects metacognitive judgments of perception.
  • To differentiate social perspective-taking effects from general directional cueing.

Main Methods:

  • Participants performed a contrast detection task with a task-irrelevant avatar.
  • Avatar orientation (congruent/incongruent) and visibility (blindfolded/seeing) were manipulated.
  • Metacognitive efficiency was assessed based on accuracy and sensitivity.

Main Results:

  • Congruent avatar orientation improved accuracy and sensitivity, indicating directional cueing.
  • Metacognitive efficiency was enhanced only by a seeing avatar's congruency.
  • Social perspective-taking, not just directional cueing, modulated metacognitive judgments.

Conclusions:

  • Perceptual metacognitive ability can be socially enhanced.
  • Sharing perception with others positively influences self-assessment of perceptual performance.
  • Social factors play a crucial role in modulating metacognitive processes.
