Area of Science:

  • Surgical Innovation
  • Robotic Surgery
  • Head and Neck Surgery

Background:

  • Submandibular gland (SMG) excision traditionally uses retroauricular or transoral approaches.
  • Minimally invasive techniques are increasingly sought for head and neck procedures.
  • Robotic surgery offers enhanced visualization and instrument dexterity.

Observation:

  • A novel transaxillary approach for SMG excision was developed.
  • A single-port (SP) robotic system was utilized for the procedure.
  • A 26-year-old female patient with a submandibular lesion underwent the surgery.

Findings:

  • The single-port transaxillary robotic SMG excision was successfully performed.
  • The procedure was completed without any complications.
  • The SP robotic system provided excellent visualization and instrument control.

Implications:

  • Transaxillary SMG excision with SP robotic system is a technically feasible and safe option.
  • This approach may offer unique advantages over traditional methods.
  • Further research is warranted to validate this technique in a larger cohort.
