Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between adenoid hypertrophy and allergic rhinitis in pediatric patients.
  • To compare symptom severity and treatment outcomes based on immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels and allergic history.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 130 pediatric patients undergoing adenoidectomy was studied.
  • Patients were categorized into two groups: Group I (raised IgE and allergic rhinitis) and Group II (normal IgE).
  • Visual Analog Scale (VAS) scores were assessed pre- and post-operatively.

Main Results:

  • Adenoid volume was significantly larger in patients with allergic history and elevated IgE levels (p<0.05).
  • Pre-operative and post-operative VAS scores differed significantly between the groups (p=0.046 and p=0.043, respectively).
  • Group II (no allergic history) demonstrated a statistically significant greater improvement in VAS scores post-operatively (p=0.027).

Conclusions:

  • Children with allergic rhinitis may present earlier with adenoid hypertrophy symptoms.
  • Adenoid hypertrophy management in children with allergic rhinitis should consider the underlying allergic component.
  • Patients without a history of allergies tend to achieve better post-operative symptom relief.
